What’s the Best Natural Psoriasis Shampoo: Take Your Pick

When you’ve had a itchy, red, and inflamed psoriasis-ridden scalp for awhile, you become increasingly reluctant to put any extra, unnecessary irritants on your hyper-sensitive scalp. Sure, medicated shampoos work quickly, but in the long run – a natural psoriasis shampoo is better for your scalp and hair.

So which natural psoriasis shampoo is best? Well, shampoos – like anything else in life – is going to differ from person to person and scalp to scalp but essentially, I recommend looking for a natural shampoo that is sulfate-free, paraben-free and if you have a gluten intolerance, gluten-free as well.

Here are the top natural psoriasis shampoos that fit the bill. Happy sudsing! (Well, actually – most natural shampoos aren’t very sudsy. Just apply to the crown of your head and rub it in. It doesn’t have to lather for it to clean. The lack of satisfying suds will take some getting used to but your scalp and hair will thank you for it).

Era Organics Natural Hair + Scalp Therapy

best natural psoriasis shampoo

This is my favorite natural shampoo although I use it sparingly because it’s so pricey. Still, it’s totally worth it for what it does for my scalp and more importantly, my hair. The formula consists of hair-helping, scaling-healing ingredients like aloe vera (the largest component of this shampoo formula), argan oil, and Manuka honey. It’s also completely free of alcohol. sodium laureth sulfate, silicon (so good for curly hair like mine), parabens and fragrance. The fact that it’s cruelty-free is also a huge bonus in my book.

The overall result is that it leaves my scalp feeling more moisturized and seems to relieve itchiness. It also visibly hydrates hair, which is a relief especially if you’re coming from harsher medicated psoriasis shampoos or just normal drugstore shampoo.

Keep in mind that thanks to the lack of SLS, this shampoo doesn’t lather well but it does the job without the suds. Just rub it in around the crown of your head – you don’t need to use a lot or make it lather more.

TheraNeem Naturals Gentle Therape Shampoo

natural-psoriasis-shampoo-review

True to its name, the TheraNeem shampoo is gentle and non-irritating, even to a sensitive, scaly and red scalp. It’s gentle enough to use on a daily basis – overall, I’d rate this as one of the most mild shampoos you can use on your scalp. It’s probably not as non-irritating as something like a homemade, pure soap nuts shampoo (which doesn’t make my scalp tingle when I sweat), but it’s pretty much the best you can get ready-made.

The shampoo is really liquid-y, but you can squirt it directly into your hair so application is easy enough. There’s a bit of foaming, too, so that’ll feel familiar if you’re just switching over from normal shampoo. The only downside, at least for me, is the scent – but don’t worry, it’s not overpowering and some seem to find it pleasant.

Maple Holistics Moisture Control Shampoo

natural-psoriasis-shampoo-moisturizing

This moisturizing shampoo is the best natural psoriasis shampoo for the winter months. My scalp psoriasis always starts acting up right around November-ish. It’s probably a combination of the drier, colder weather as well as the decreasing amount of sunlight – but whatever it is, my scalp’s usually in need of more hydration than usual and this shampoo’s perfect.

It’s got no sulfates, parabens, silicon, or fragrance. What it does have is a healthy heap of hydrating natural oils like almond oil, lavender oil, parsley seed oil, carrot oil, and jojoba oil.

Thanks to the hydrating ingredients and lack of irritants, it’s hugely helpful for dry hair and scalp. The result is less scalp itching and flaking and softer, more moisturized, healthier hair.

Another awesome natural shampoo from Maple Holistics, this tea tree-containing shampoo has also got lavender oil and rosemary oil to fight infection and stimulate stronger hair growth. As always, there are no sulfates, parabens or fragrance in this shampoo.

Overall really great for leaving your hair and scap feeling refreshed and oil- and buildup-free.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo

natural psoriasis shampoo

This is pretty much a medicated shampoo (containing salicylic acid) combined with a host of natural, hair-helping ingredients. If salicylic acid helps your scalp psoriasis but you don’t want any of the irritating chemicals that’re packed into normal shampoo – this one is perfect for you.

The only downside to this shampoo is that it can be a bit drying. The manufacturers say that this is gentle enough to use daily without drying out your scalp or hair but personally, I’ve found this to be a little too “deep cleansing.” It’s great to use every once in awhile as a clarifying shampoo but unless you have very oily hair or a very oily scalp, this might be a little too drying for you.
